High Court upholds Wellington’s rainbow crossing
Roa v Wellington City Council [2025] NZHC 609
David Friar | March 2025
In a victory for common sense, the High Court ruled this afternoon that Wellington’s rainbow crossing is lawful. The crossing was installed by the Wellington City Council in 2018 to celebrate LGBTQIA+ pride and diversity.
The Court rejected a challenge by a “group of concerned ratepayers” that the crossing was a safety risk and that it was likely to mislead or confuse drivers and pedestrians. The Court instead ruled that the evidence showed that there was a “high level” of safety at the location, and that road users weren’t misled about its meaning.
